Is a Honda Rebel a good beginner's bike?
I'm thinking about getting a motorcycle, and I have no previous experience, so jumping on a Harley isn't the first thing I'll do.
Is the Honda Rebel a good choice? It's cheap, around $4000 new, and runs 84 miles to the gallon. Seems like a good choice to me. Any experience.
Also, when it comes to safety gear, what do you guys use to drive around town? I am in college, and wearing a full blown leather suit is kinda impractical. Is gloves, a helmet and a leather jacket good enough? For riding around campus and to and from campus I won't hit high speeds anyways.
Any comments appreciated
The Rebel is an excelent choice for beginners, or for those wanting cheap city transportation. Also check out the Yamaha Virago/V-Star 250 and Suzuki GS250 or the new TU250.
The Virago and GS can take Leatherlyke hard lockable saddlebags -- very handy on campus.
"Gear" is for falling, not riding. You can fall over standing still and hit your head and die. My choice of gear: Good boots -- because your feet and the ground meet often (I wear Tony Lama Value Line.) I never ride without boots on. Leather Gloves -- because if you fall it is instinctive to throw out a hand to break the fall. Leather/denim jacket/pants -- to lessen the scraping if you fall while moving -- and 10 mph can take off a lot of skin. Truthfully, I pass on gloves etc. when the weather is nice; but I have been riding collision free for 45 years. Helmet because it's the law.
When riding it is you that will be hurt in a collision, and thus it behoves you to avoid the collision. Trust no one. Stop signs and lights cannot actually stop a vehicle. A driver can look at you, eye to eye, and not see you. Anyone coming toward you at too slow of a speed may be about to turn left in front of you, especially if there is a road or driveway to your right. Your small size, speed and agility are what will allow you to dodge the cagers.
